The Pacific Maritime Association, which represents shippers, issued a statement explaining that the labor shortage led to the closure of the San Pedro Bay Port Complex, which moves over 20 million shipping containers annually, carrying goods worth more than $300 billion. This coordinated action by the largest ILWU local on the West Coast resulted in the shutdown of the largest gateway for maritime trade in the United States, making it impossible to move goods in and out of these ports.
